Public consultations on the Ecological Assessment of the Safety Upgrade Program took place at Zaporizhzhya NPP

On Friday, July 1, public consultations regarding the scope of the Ecological Assessment of the Complex (consolidated) Safety Upgrade Program of Power Units of Nuclear Power Plants took place at the Culture and Business Centre of Zaporizhzhya NPP.

The aim of the next CCSUP Environmental Assessment is the reassessment of the impact on the environment during CCSUP implementation with regard to modifications made in CCSUP in  2012 - 2015, its measures, completed during that period, as well as the actual changes in the esituation and its monitoring procedures, which took place since the completion of the previous CCSUP EA.

In the discussion participated: Oleksandr Nemtsov, the Head of Environmental Department, Executive Directorate for NRS and Scientific and Technical Support; Roman Zibnitsky, the Head of Information and Image Projects Department of SE NNEGC "Energoatom"; Ludvig Litvinsky, Environment, Health and Safety Expert of CCSUP PMU; specialists from ZNPP, as well as journalists, NGO representatives of  Energodar and the control area.

Oleksandr Nemtsov said in his report that this program is implemented with the aim of further steady improvement of nuclear safety, assurance of efficient and reliable operation of the energy sector, bringing safety of nuclear power units of Ukraine to the level, which is in compliance with the international requirements for nuclear safety and environmental protection.

"The activity of SE NNEGC "Energoatom" is transparent and open, the Company maintains a continuous dialogue with the public, thus the realisation of the measures regarding this Program implementation is a really necessary condition nowadays. Questions, comments and proposals will form the basis for a final report, - said Roman Zibnitsky. Until August 2016 questions and proposals concerning the scope of the next Ecological Assessment cab be sent in the format "question-answer" to the Company's address, as well as via the information centre of Zaporizhzhya NPP.

All questions, proposals and comments of the public with full and complete answers of specialists will be reviewed and taken into account in the CCSUP EA final report.

The dialogue between residents of the city, representatives of public organizations, and specialists of SE NNEGC "Energoatom" was built in the format "question-answer". Questions from the audience concerned different aspects of life of the region.

 The first Ecological Assessment was performed in 2011 by an independent international team with the participation of the experts from the company "Poyry" (Finland, France, Switzerland and Germany), the Ukrainian Center of Environmental and Water Projects, and the company "AESKAR" (Ukraine). CCSUP EA was carried out in accordance with the EBRD Environmental and Social Policy, environmental legislation of the European Union, in particular EU Directive 2001/42/EU, and took into account the best world practices.

Ecological Assessment includes the following tasks: assessment of impacts on the environment, social and industrial environment, complex measures regarding the assurance of the standard conditions of the environment and its safety, changes of the environmental impact during CCSUP implementation, EA results of the CCSUP implementation for Ukrainian NPPs, Ecological assessment of the results of CCSUP implementation, assessment of a possible impact of the CCSUP implementation in a transboundary context and activities in informing the bordering countries, public consultations on the CCSUP  implementation, mitigation or optimization measures and conclusions.

CCSUP is implemented with the Company's own funds, as well as at the expense of the loans, granted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Atomic Energy Community in the total amount of 600 million Euro. Periodic fulfilment of the CCSUP EA is a mandatory condition precedent to these loans.
