Today, on April 13, 2021, the head of SE NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin celebrates his 60th anniversary.

Most of his life, over 35 years, Petro Kotin devoted to nuclear power. Upon graduating from the university in the specialty «Nuclear power plants and facilities» in 1985 he started his career at Zaporizhzhya NPP. It was there that the real «nuclear universities» took place – he worked his way up from the reactor shop operator to the General Manager of the nuclear power plant.

Having become a manager, he went to the university again and got the second higher education – already in the field of state and municipal administration. Moreover, every time life tossed a new challenge to Petro Kotin, he advanced in knowledge and competencies in the sphere of public administration, technology, and engineering. Thus, he became not just a well-known and competent specialist, but also one of the best experts in the nuclear field. At the invitation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he participated in safety audit missions at nuclear power plants around the world. He also gave presentations and educational lectures in various countries as well as managed important nuclear activities, such as the Ukraine-EU Energy Bridge.

Each project required painstaking and exceptionally challenging work, resulting in gaining invaluable experience. Probably, this is precisely why Petro Kotin was bent on taking charge of NNEGC Energoatom in, perhaps, the most difficult times, when the Company was thrown into disarray: one and a half billion losses in the first quarter of 2020, zero cash in the account, a pandemic, the prospect of balance restrictions along with forced shutdowns of power units...

Undertaking a commitment and responsibility to rectify the situation is the choice of the strongest and most dedicated personalities. After all, he faced many challenges, and each of them was supersophisticated:

  • protecting  the interests of Energoatom in the energy market chaos;
  • completing the diversification of nuclear fuel supplies despite pressure from Russia;
  • finishing construction of the first stage of the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility at a record pace and finally stop the export of spent nuclear fuel to Russia;
  • getting the strategically important for Ukraine construction of the Khmelnytskyi NPP power units 3 and 4 under way, etc.

Petro Kotin and his team succeeded in all of that. Moreover,  during challenging last year, Company employees’ salaries were raised, social security was improved as well as social contributions were increased. At Mr. Kotin's initiative, medical oxygen is produced at Ukrainian nuclear power plants and NNEGC will supply it to the hospitals for patients with COVID-19 free of charge.

 We are absolutely convinced that stability and prosperity are the future of the nuclear power industry. Therefore, I join the entire NNEGC team of many thousands in congratulating and wish Petro Kotin good health, inspiration and truly nuclear energy for the implementation of ambitious plans for Energoatom’s development and well-being.

Honoured Power Engineer of Ukraine, President Emeritus of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society Volodymyr Bronnikov
